Design & Remodel Goals:
- One of the major goals of the client was to create a nice kitchen on a budget using the existing footprint of the kitchen.
- The existing laminate flooring that was recently installed was to remain.
- An existing natural maple dining room table set and a glassware storage hutch cabinet were components of the kitchen that would also remain. Essentially, the design of the new kitchen would revolve around the floor and the maple components already in the kitchen.
- The owner also desired to create a larger, more open feel to the kitchen, since it was relatively small area.
How Goals Were Accomplished:
- The kitchen was small, no doubt, so to alleviate this aspect and create a more open feel, the drop ceiling was removed over the kitchen (it housed a fluorescent light box), cabinets were removed where they hung from the ceiling between the kitchen & the nook, and a pass-through window was installed to the family room area. These changes made dramatic improvements to the space.
- Stainless steel appliances were utilized to provide an updated, quality feel. The fashionable peninsula ceiling-hung range hood provides visual interest and functionality.
- Cabinet space was thoroughly maximized with the design of roll-outs, a revolving-shelf wall corner cabinet, and a cabinet door to access a dead corner on the back of the peninsula. A maple wood window bridge with hockey puck lights handsomely fills the dead space above the kitchen sink window, providing visual interest and ambiance. This bridge also houses an indirect fluorescent to meet Title 24 energy code requirements.
- Cobalt blue pendant lights bring in color to the peninsula cooktop / oven / range hood area. Hockey puck accent lighting was installed below all of the wall cabinets. Recessed can lights serve to functionally illuminate the kitchen.
- Black granite tile countertops and slate tile full-splashes, with a decorative border running through the center of the splash, highlight and enrich the kitchen.
