Design & Remodel Goals:
- Open the kitchen up to the family room.
- Create a lighter, brighter space.
- Design for a larger kitchen, if possible.
- Create a more functional kitchen.
- Vastly update the quality and horrendous look of the existing kitchen materials that consisted of bright orange laminate countertops, dated sheet vinyl floor, dirty yellow tile backsplash, dingy wallpaper, dark paneling, an offensive fluorescent, dark painted ceiling beams, an oppressive fluorescent ceiling light box, and dark-oak cabinets.
- Maintain the existing kitchen sink window, since it was blocked in by brick on the exterior, and any changes to this window would be costly.
How Goals Were Accomplished:
- The existing kitchen / family room wall was removed. The kitchen drop kitchen ceiling was dropped. The dark ceiling beams were removed. And, the kitchen was completely gutted.
- The kitchen was expanded approximately 2’ into a large bedroom at the new range area and the new peninsula area was also pushed towards the family room where an existing indoor planter area was eliminated. These changes created a larger, much more functional kitchen.
- The expansion into the bedroom required that a soffit be built over this area to allow for a structural beam to be installed for roof support.
- A raised peninsula bar area was designed to allow for some privacy between the two rooms. Seating for 4 allows for cozy gatherings.
- Skylights were installed in the family room to allow for more light into the entire space. The oppressive fireplace rock in the family room was removed and a new mantle with legs installed to provide a more open feel to the entire area.
- Stainless steel appliances, including refrigerator, gas range, range hood, single oven, & dishwasher provide a sleek elegance. A warming drawer with a cabinet drawer panel was also installed at the peninsula.
- Island pendants highlight the extremely functional island. Hockey puck accent lighting was installed below all wall cabinet areas. Recessed can lights assimilate with the other lighting to create a very balanced kitchen lighting scheme.
- Custom-fabricated, honed, granite slab countertops with an 8” high backsplash that also wraps around at the raised peninsula area, provide a luxurious feel.
- Hardwood floors were installed and stained to provide a warm elegance to the entire new space. A great deal of floor leveling was required due to the old, inadequate framing.
- The walls were painted yellow to provide a cheerful design element.
