Client’s Objectives:

  • Wanted more functional bathroom
  • Wanted easy access to shower
  • Wanted to minimize maintenance
  • Wanted a safe bathroom for the owner’s two young boys
  • Wanted more space in the bath, since Mom or Dad helped both the boys bath at the same time
  • Wanted a more open feel
  • Wanted more lighting

  • Client’s Objectives Met:
  • To increase space & functionality in the bath, the toilet was relocated to the opposite side to allow for more floor space
  • The vanity was angled to maximize floor space
  • The bath was designed with no shower door to minimize maintenance, maximize floor space, & eliminate the difficult operation of a shower door for the young boys (i.e. slamming doors)
  • Used rough tile for good traction
  • Utilized a quartz countertop & backsplash material to reduce maintenance
  • Used a clear glass shower panel to provide for a more open feel
  • Used an angular countertop (& vanity ) to get away from boxy feeling
  • Utilized a “floating” vanity with space below to the floor to add to the spacious feel
  • Installed a hand-held shower head on a slide-bar to allow for small people & adults
  • Installed 5 new recessed can lights, as well as 2 wall sconces in the medicine cabinet/mirror area above the vanity

Difficulty of Obstacles Overcome:

  • Determining angle of vanity to avoid conflict with toilet
  • Since the existing bath window was very close to the shower, the shower dam was angled back to accommodate the window & allow for a wider shower area near the shower head

Innovative Use of Materials or Methods of Construction:

  • Copper vessel sink
  • Angled cabinet front
  • Angular countertop with extension over the toilet for increased functionality
  • Border of 6x6 slate at the top of the shower & at the outside edges of the shower serves to break up the 12x12 shower wall pattern & tie in to the 6x6 shower floor
  • ½” thick, clear, tempered glass was utilized to provide more rigidity to the shower enclosure panel
  • The variable colors in the “California gold” slate were designed to complement the color of the vanity
