Major Design & Remodel Goals
- Create a larger, better functioning kitchen.
- Eliminate the existing kitchen nook to allow for a larger kitchen.
- Create a showplace kitchen for entertaining family & friends.
- Create a more open, brighter, airy feel to the new kitchen - all under the existing roof-line.
- Eliminate the 70’s style out-dated kitchen & bring in a more high-tech, contemporary, quality feel to the new space.
- Break up the feel of the kitchen with its traditional vertical and horizontal lines. Attempt to soften the appearance of the existing kitchen.
- Create a new kitchen that would complement the adjoining family room.
How Goals Were Accomplished
- The existing kitchen footprint was maintained, however the kitchen expanded into the nook creating a larger, more functional kitchen, yet maintaining a comfortable, personal, seating area. The peninsula idea was maintained, since the kitchen didn’t allow for proper clearances with an island style design. The owner also did not wish to sacrifice their exterior patio area / pool areas and consequently did not want to expand out.
- The kitchen ceiling was raised from 8’ high to 9’ high to allow for a more open, airy feel.
- The kitchen was made brighter by the use of natural maple cabinetry with a toner finish, natural earth-tone granite slab countertops, and natural earth-tone limestone tile floors with complementary limestone backsplashes.
- Radius elements were added in the form of a radius peninsula tip, a radius pendant light track above the peninsula, a full, bull-nose, granite slab, edge detail, radius seat backs on the bar seating and radius, pendant, light lamps. These elements all soften the vertical & horizontal features in the new kitchen.
- Recessed can lighting was installed in the ceiling and low-voltage hockey puck lighting was installed in under wall cabinet locations and within the glass cabinet door areas. All of this lighting functions together to create a wonderful, warm illumination of the new kitchen.
- Black-trimmed appliances, black granite slab countertops, black seats on the stools, & black diamond dots in the backsplashes, along with the stainless steel appliances, seating, electrical device cover plates & track lighting trim pull the kitchen together.
- A window bridge was installed between the wall cabinets over the kitchen sink to provide architectural value to potentially vacant area. The window bridge also housed hockey puck down-lighting and a spot to install an indirect fluorescent light, facing towards the ceiling, to meet Title 24 energy code requirements.
- The natural maple cabinetry with the toner finish allows for a less splotchy appearance that generally accompanies maple finishes. The owner’s elected to have this finish performed to allow for a more contemporary feel.
- The family room received a complementary entertainment center, a fireplace mantle & legs, a limestone face & hearth, and new carpet.
