Client’s
Issues & Goals:
- Dark, as well as dated
- No natural light - fluorescent ceiling lights on all the time
- U-shaped, island was functionally confining due to the return legs on
the ends
- Wanted message center / TV area closer to nook
- Wanted more space to cooking together
- Little connection between the kitchen to the family room
- Didn’t want granite countertops – they wanted something different
- Overall, desired more open feel and warm, homey feeling
Client’s Objectives / Expectations Met & Surpassed:
- New skylight added to naturally brighten kitchen (removed fluorescents)
- Stair-stepped ceiling light pendants create a functional, yet beautiful
effect
- Message center / TV area relocated to the opposite end of the kitchen to
allow for a closer connection to the nook and to increase functionality
- U-shaped, island re-designed to create continuous counter work area
- Cooking area re-designed to allow for more usable work space
- Increased functionality for multiple cooks
- Beam hung, wall cabinets removed for more connection to family room
- Raised bar countertop overhang lowered to provide the open connection to
the family room
- Limestone countertops, butcher-block countertops and a tumbled stone
backsplash complement earth tone hardwood floors and natural wood ceilings &
beams
- White, shaker style cabinets, open display shelving areas, glass wall
cabinet doors create open ambiance
Difficulty of Obstacles Overcome:
- Full 18x18 limestone tiles used for the countertop (no cuts)
- Matching & patching the existing tongue and groove wood ceiling
- Matching the new skylight to the existing recessed, ceiling, fluorescent
light box opening
- Seamless tie in to existing hardwood floor areas
