Design Goals
- Reconfigure the existing chopped up spaces (kitchen, laundry, bedroom / office & closet) to accommodate desires & increase functionality
- The old home, built in the 1940’s, consisted of small spaces and a small lot, so enlarging the space was not feasible
- A 2nd story was added above the kitchen several years prior, thus eliminating the possibility of higher ceilings or skylights
- Lots of natural light to bring the lush backyard “into” the kitchen
- More light at night
- Quaint, country style kitchen to go with the décor of the rest of the home
- Comfortable, homey feel
- Multiple colors of cabinets desired
- Quality materials
Design Goals Accomplished:
The existing floor plan was reconfigured to increase functionality:
- The existing bedroom / office area was separated from the kitchen (all bedrooms were now upstairs)
- A new laundry area was developed in the existing closet space
- The kitchen / dining room opening was relocated
- Wood clad windows & doors were designed for the most of the back of the house to allow for natural light & exposure to the wonderful garden
- Unexpected and extensive dry rot repairs, illegal framing, & updates of antiquated plumbing, electrical & mechanical repairs were required which added substantially to project costs
- 2 painted cabinet colors and knotty alder cabinets were beautifully blended to provide an unfitted, country style
- Bead board paneling was utilized to accentuate the country feel of the kitchen and flow with adjacent areas in the dining area
- Granite slab countertops with a “farm-style” kitchen sink and enhance the country feel of the kitchen
- Paver floor tiles provide functionality and beauty to this colorful scene
- Stainless steel appliances seamlessly complement the 3 distinct cabinet styles
- Recessed can lights, pendant lighting, and hockey puck lighting provide dramatic and vastly improved illumination at night
